Matilda Yueyang Peng (b. 2000, Qingdao, China) holds a BA in English and Art History from Tufts University and a BFA in fine art from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. She is a current MFA candidate at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her work investigates the space between language and the limitations of imagery. Peng’s constant experience of drifting back and forth between home and other places has influenced her sense of narrative and documentation in art. Delving into the critical dimensions of the creative mind, her works have observed how the mind amplifies and selects moments to intricately weave the threads of human narratives—an endeavor to capture, recount, and document the fleeting emotions and visions that define our existence. She is also concerned with the interplay of personal and intergenerational memory, history, and storytelling. Using visual imagery as her primary medium, Peng examines the tension between the desire for perpetual documentation and the inherent futility of such preservation. Her art is deeply informed by her study of poetry and poetic imagery as well. She has exhibited her work in the Griffin Museum of Photography (Winchester, MA, USA), Gallery 263 (Cambridge, MA, USA), Leica Gallery in Boston, and Moon Gallery in Tokyo, among others.
